Prof. Dr. Maurice Wilkes

Maurice Wilkes is considered to be one of the fathers of modern-day computing.

Maurice V. Wilkes was head of the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge from 1945 to 1980. Since then he has worked in industry, first with DEC in Massachusetts and now at the AT&T Laboratories Cambridge (formerly the Olivetti and Oracle Research Laboratory). He is a Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society, and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is a Foreign Associate of both the US National Academy of Sciences and the US National Academy of Engineering. He is also a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was the recipient of the 1992 Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology. In 1967, Wilkes delivered the ACM Turing Lecture and in 1980 he received the Eckert-Mauchly award from the ACM and the IEEE Computer Society. He has written a number of books; these include Memoirs of a Computer Pioneer (MIT Press, 1985) and Computing Perspectives (Morgan-Kaufmann, 1995).

Susan Estrada, president of Aldea Communications, is the director of CENIC's One Gigabit or Bust Initiative. She is responsible for bringing together the interests of research, education, commerce, state and local government and the general public to develop an action plan for delivery of one gigabit broadband capabilities to every educational institution, business and home in California by 2010. She was also a founder of the Commercial Internet Exchange (CIX), a former area director for the Internet Engineering Software Group (IESG) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

Professor Loucopoulos holds the chair of Information Systems Engineering, a full established chair, at the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST), in Manchester, U.K.
